Angkor Was, Cambodia 20 x 16" oil on canvas |
The striking effect of light on objects is the primary motivation for Jan's work. When painting a still life or portrait in her studio, she is able to control light through the windows to achieve the desired "light effect" that is her objective. When painting the splendor of the landscape, she prefers painting en plein-air. She believes that painting outside in the early morning or at the end of the day enables one to capture the strongest light effects and dramatic atmosphere. Many of her oil paintings are inspired by the Vermont landscape, where she lives, and she also travels to paint, always carrying a sketch pad. Jan's classical oil painting instruction includes studying with the internationally known painter, Frank Mason (American, b.1922), who taught over 50 years at the Art Students League in NYC. His teacher, Frank Dumond, was a principal painter at the Lyme Art Colony, early in the 20th century. From this training, she learned not only the techniques of classical oil painting, but also the value of the materials used in oil painting. | |||
